Brothers Thomas & Stuart Musgrave started the family-owned business in 1876 and the Musgrave Group today is one of Ireland’s largest and most successful companies, serving more than 3,600 retail stores throughout Ireland, the UK and Spain. Musgrave is primarily a supermarket and convenience store franchiser and wholesaler, operating the SuperValu and Centra supermarket chains across the Island of Ireland, Mace in Northern Ireland (NI), and a number of fascia’s in Spain. It also supplies foodservice operators and operates cash & carry outlets across the Island of Ireland and in Spain. Across the island of Ireland, there are two other brands are Frank and Honest Coffee within our stores and Chipmongers, a franchise model within the foodservice sector.

In 2017 Musgrave Group had retail sales of €5.1 billion and wholesale sales of €3.7 billion. They are also Ireland’s largest private sector employer with over 40,000 employees.

Musgrave partners work with entrepreneurial retailers to provide the consumer with a food offer that is different and better. Independent retailers own most of the stores associated with its brands. Musgrave’s approach is to equip these retailers with the sales, marketing, IT, training, finance and logistical expertise that come with the most advanced retail model.

  • Our Recruitment Journey
    We aim to make the recruitment journey as pain-free as possible. It mainly consists of one or two competency-based interviews with two colleagues from our business. This will normally be the Hiring Manager and the Talent Acquisition Specialist (or another member of the HR team). On occasion, depending on the role, we will ask candidates to prepare a presentation which will usually involve visiting one of our SuperValu or Centra stores, or we have also used role play experiments in store as another way of measuring a potential candidate's suitability for the role. Overall, we aim to give our candidates a sense of who we are as a company as much as getting as much information from the potential candidate to assess their suitability for the role. We also offer feedback to candidates who are unsuccessful if we are asked.
  • Our Induction Journey
    Although the induction journey can vary depending on the role you have been successful in, we normally start it with a general HR and Health and Safety induction and a tour of the buildings. Then your manager will have created a two week initial plan of your induction, which will include meeting significant stakeholders for your role, visiting key locations and understanding our processes and procedures. You will also be invited to our personal development course that all employees engage in called Breakthrough and the MD invites our new colleagues for lunch on a quarterly basis.

  • How we support the community
    In 2001, the company formed a partnership with local charity, Action Cancer, lending SuperValu’s support to the organisation’s mobile cancer services and, to date, 35,000 people have used the life-saving services on board the charity’s hi-tech Big Bus unit. For the past 10 years Centra has supported the charity’s Health Action programme for schools, bring cancer prevention messages to over 400,000 young people in schools in Northern Ireland. Together, Musgrave central office along with SuperValu and Centra stores, have raised almost £2 million for Action Cancer.
